Today’s Connections Category Hints

AUGUST 12 #427

There are a lot of unknowns in every singleConnectionspuzzle, but the categories are the biggest mystery and the one players will have to have some understanding of to solve the puzzle.

If you still need some hints about what the categories might be, we have all of them listed out for you by color:

A crown in Connections Categories August 12

MERCURY

TIN

Put some GOLD in that crown to make it more sparkly when you earn it, but probably avoid these other metals. LEAD certainly does not make a good crown, and MERCURY and TIN will not help either.

Theymight all be metal, but that does not make them equally good for making sparkly headwear. Save the GOLD for your crowns, use the rest for other purposes. MERCURY would not be in a solid state anyway.

Crowns for Connections Answers August 12

QUEEN

TWIN

Unfortunately, it was not a category about royal or noble terms, but rather one about themore mundane world of mattress sizes. The price of them increases exponentially with the size, as well as the frame and bedding to go with it.

It is certainly a little less fun to think about, but I suppose real queens and kings have to sleep on real mattresses as well. They, however, likely do not have to worry about the price and the amount of space it takes up in their room.

12 Letter Boxed Strategies To Win Quickly

The Letter Boxed game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to connect letters to form words while using various strategies to win quickly.

JOHN

THRONE

This category is a bit more “vulgar” than the usualConnectionscategories, but it is not as bad as it could be. Luckily these are all fairly innocuous words, and while a THRONE could have been included with the fun royal terms instead, it ended up being for amuch less fun and less restful category than the others. HEAD is also a bit unusual, and at least in American dialects very rarely ever used in this context, so it was a little confusing to figure out the last word.

BUTTER

BUTTERFLY

It’s very interesting to me that BUTTER, BUTTERFLY, and BUTCHER are so close together in terms of spelling and are also different kinds of knives. The base words come from very different roots as well, so it isquite curious how knives ended up with these names.

BOWIE is a bit different and did not have a similar spelling, but by this time you are mainly just selecting the last four words left anyway. Hopefully if not, the similar spelling and them all starting with a B might lead you to guess these ones anyway.
