Agatha All Along Finally Name-Dropped Mephisto

Following Years of Fan Speculation and Theories

Speculation about Mephisto’s existence in the MCU truly began with 2021’sWandaVision, the first MCU series to stream on Disney+. While the demon lord never appeared nor even referenced, an explosion of theories pointing to potential evidence and clues plagued the internet during the show’s release and years afterward. Eventually,“Mephisto Confirmed” became a widespread joke whenever new MCU trailers dropped, often pointing to truly innocuous pieces of evidence for the sake of the running gag.

12 Biggest Unanswered Questions After Agatha All Along

Agatha All Along has recently concluded, providing a satisfying ending that still leaves audiences with some very exciting MCU questions.

That said, there were some more legitimate theories that Mephisto was going to appear either in 2021’sSpider-Man: No Way Homedue to his dark comics history with Peter Parker, or in 2022’sDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessas a major supernatural foe. However, 2024’sAgatha All Alongepisode 3 finally name-dropped Mephisto three years later. During the coven’s first trial on the Witches' Road, potions witch Jennifer Kale shared some insights with Billy Maximoff aboutAgatha and the rumors that her son Nicholas Scratchbecame an “agent of Mephisto” after she allegedly traded him for a copy of the Darkhold.

An “Agent of Mephisto” Was Never Revealed In Agatha All Along

It Wasn’t Billy Maximoff or Nicholas Scratch

During the release ofAgatha All Alongand following this Mephisto reveal from Jennifer Kale, it was theorized that Joe Locke’s “Teen” might be an agent of Mephisto in connection with his real identity asa reincarnated Billy Maximoff aka Wiccan. This would have tied to the character’s comics history, as Billy and Tommy’s souls were originally part of Mephisto himself before Wanda unknowingly used them to create her sons with her powers. Perhaps in the MCU, Mephisto would have had some level of influence over Billy.

Although “Teen” was indeed revealed to be Billy Maximoff inAgatha All Along, his reincarnation had nothing to do with Mephisto. Likewise, it was also confirmed that Agatha’s own son, Nicholas Scratch, was not an agent of Mephisto as was rumored.ByAgatha All Along’sending, there were no further reveals about who might have been an agent of Mephisto, beyond the single reference in the third episode that he does have people who serve and do his bidding.

Marvel Needs To Do Something With Mephisto Now

He Needs To Be More Than A Reference

Although thisAgatha All Alongmention finally confirmed Mephisto, it was admittedly a bit of a letdown. After all, it was essentially a throwaway line that didn’t do or reveal anything beyond the confirmation that Mephisto exists. While that’s certainly exciting enough in its own way, one would have hoped that there would have been a little meat to the reveal after years of theories and speculation.

“Mephisto has the capability of becoming a key overarching villain, just like Thanos the Mad Titan or presumably, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom…”

Despite the single reference to Marvel’s predominant Lord of Evil,Mephisto certainly deserves more in the MCU going forward. After all, he has the potential to become a major villain sourced in the MCU’s more supernatural stories. Likewise, Mephisto ranks high of the list of Marvel’s most powerful villains. Mephisto has the capability of becoming a key overarching villain, just like Thanos the Mad Titan or presumablyRobert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

In that same vein,it’s possible Mephisto could be involved in the origins of Doctor Doomconsidering their extremely dark history in the comics. When Victor von Doom was a child, his mother Cynthia lost her life at the hands of Mephisto who had promised her power in exchange for her soul. Seeing as how this motivated Doom’s desire to learn sorcery just as much as science to free his mother’s soul, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mephisto’s full debut becomes tied with Doom’s in the MCU. That said, it’s also possible that Mephisto’s debut could be happening even sooner.
