WhileHot Frostyis mostly a lighthearted, holiday film,its story contains a bit of tragedy concerning Kathy’s previous husband.Kathy,played by Lacey Chabert, is one of the two main characters in the 2024 Netflix Christmas fantasy romantic comedy. She lives in the small town of Hope Springs, where she owns a diner. One night, after one of Kathy’s friends gifts her a red scarf (which is magical, unbeknownst to her), she wraps it around a snowman, who then comes to life and completely changes Kathy’s world.
Dustin Milligan stars as Jack (the snowman) alongside Chabert inthe cast ofHot Frostyon Netflix. Over the course of the (mostly) lighthearted film, Kathy and Jack fall in love. However, aside from Kathy’s reservations due to what happened to her last husband, one of the couple’s biggest problems is that Jack’s time on Earth is seemingly finite. It’s only a matter of time before he melts. The good news is thatHot Frostyis a Christmas movie, meaning magic is all-around, giving Jack ample opportunity to survive. Sadly,magic couldn’t cure Kathy’s husband, Paul.

As the audience learns towards the beginning ofthe Netflix Christmas movie, Kathy is a widow. Her husband,Paul, died two years prior to the story inHot Frosty.When Kathy leaves Jack home alone, he snoops through her stuff a little bit and finds Paul’s medical files. They contain a schedule mentioning surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, letting viewers know that Paul had some form of cancer.
When Jack asks Kathy about what he found in her basement, she explains that everything with Paul happened so quickly. So, he didn’t have cancer long before he died.After his death, Kathy stopped taking care of herself(and her house, since Paul was the one who took care of all the home repairs). The grief of losing Paul seemingly overwhelmed Lacey Chabert’s character. Thankfully, byHot Frosty’s ending, Kathy learns to prioritize her needs and take a chance on love again.

That all changed once Paul died.
