Warning: spoilers ahead forThe Umbrella Academyseason 4’s finale

Summary

Sloane’s absence is an unavoidable conversation inThe Umbrella Academyseason 4, no matter how much the show attempts to gloss over it. After Netflix’sThe Umbrella Academyintroduced the Sparrows in season 3, it wasted little time picking them off one-by-one until only Sloane and Ben remained to represent the Sparrow clan inThe Umbrella Academyseason 3’s final episode. Their numbers were reduced further after Allison fulfilled Sir Reginald Hargreeves' plan to reset the universe, and Sloane became the only surviving member of the Umbrella and Sparrow academies not transferred into the new timeline.

The Umbrella Academyseason 4 barely mentions Sloane, and Genesis Rodriguez’s character never appears during the final batch of episodes. There are no great revelations regardingSloane’s disappearance at the end of season 3, and Luther evidently couldn’t find an alternate version of her in season 4’s timeline. WithThe Umbrella Academystrictly a no-Sloane zone in its final season, major questions about Luther’s missing wife are left hanging.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Ending Explained

The Umbrella Academy has ended with its fourth season, which saw the final apocalypse and some shocking reveals that changed the team’s lives.

Sloane Was Never Part Of The Umbrella Academy Season 4’s Timeline

Sloane’s Disappearance Was Permanent After All

When Sir Reginald and Allison reset the universe inThe Umbrella Academyseason 3’s ending, the new timeline was shaped to their design - hence Luther coming back from the dead, Allison’s daughter existing, and the siblings all losing their powers. Before season 4, theories suggested that Sir Reginald may have taken Sloane hostage to keep his other children in line, or perhaps even fulfilled Sloane’s dream by sending her on an adventure around the world.

Had it not been for Allison’s deal, Sir Reginald may not have spared the six Umbrella siblings, Lila, and Ben.

After watchingThe Umbrella Academyseason 4, it becomes clear thatthe version of Sloane that married Luther was never brought into the new timeline. The exact reason why remains unclear. Sir Reginald also opted against reviving other dead Sparrows like Alphonso, Marcus, and Jayme, so perhaps he simply seized the opportunity to get rid of Sloane too. The Sparrow Academy siblings were, after all, oddly cruel to their adopted father. Alternatively, Allison’s lingering feelings for Luther could have led to her insisting upon Sloane’s disappearance into the universal reset.

It also seems unlikely thatThe Umbrella Academyseason 4’s timelinewould contain its own, alternative version of Sloane. No Hargreeves siblings other than those carried over from the previous timeline are shown in season 4’s universe, which makes sense because Sir Reginald had achieved his goal of creating a world where Abigail still lived. Consequently, there was no reason forThe Umbrella Academy’s season 4 timeline to contain any marigold children. Had it not been for Allison’s deal, Sir Reginald may not have spared the six Umbrella siblings, Lila, and Ben either.

Luther Gave Up Trying To Bring Back Sloane

Luther Didn’t Fight For His Wife For Very Long

WhenThe Umbrella Academyseason 3 ended, Luther had the aura of a man who would stop at nothing to bring back his wife. Whether that meant searching high and low across the new timeline or convincing Sir Reginald to undo Sloane’s disappearance, Luther seemed determined to revive the woman he loved. At some point during the six-year gap betweenThe Umbrella Academyseasons 3 and 4, Luther evidently gave up.The final season offers no idea of how long Luther searched for Sloane, and gives no suggestion that he petitioned Sir Reginald to restore her.

Luther’s Powers In The Umbrella Academy Explained

Luther’s powers may come off as confusing in The Umbrella Academy, as they’re inconsistently used and get looped in with his ape body.

Luther merely accepted nothing could be done and buried himself in a world of DIY and g-strings, doing a disservice both to his values as a character and his romantic connection with Sloane. Their strong bond lit upThe Umbrella Academyseason 3 and marked a rare instance of a healthy relationship within an otherwise dysfunctional family. Based on the strength of his love,Luther should have turnedThe Umbrella Academy’s new timeline upside down in the name of bringing Sloane back, never resting until his goal was achieved. Whether due to lack of time or narrative convenience, that doesn’t happen.

Sloane Isn’t Brought Back In The Umbrella Academy Season 4’s Ending

When All Is Said & Done, Sloane Never Existed

The Umbrella Academyends with one final timeline reset, and a host of deceased characters brought back to life. Unfortunately, Sloane is not among them. All of the 43 super-children were created by the marigold Sir Reginald Hargreeves unleashed upon the Earth, and the entire point of the Cleanse is erasing that marigold from existence, consolidating the multiverse into the single timeline it was before Reginald’s meddling. It is, therefore, impossible that any Hargreeves sibling from any version of the Umbrella Academy can be alive when the show ends.

If the marigold never existed, then Sloane was never born. If Sloane were alive, thenThe Umbrella Academy’s final, single timeline could not have been created. Similar to how theyellow flowers that sprout inThe Umbrella Academy’s mid-credits sceneare a fleeting memory of the fallen Hargreeves siblings, Sloane is just a forgotten soul in a multiverse that no longer exists afterThe Umbrella Academy’s ending.
