Summary
The movie adaptation ofIt Ends With Usmight take place in Boston and Maine, but the production team used other filming locations to create the backdrop for the story of domestic violence and survival. Based on thecontroversial 2016 book by Colleen Hoover,It Ends With Ustells the story of a woman named Lily who grew up watching her mother get abused by her father in the fictional town of Plethora, Maine. Sadly, she finds herself in a similar dynamic after moving to Boston and starting a relationship.
Though parts of the story and characterizations are heavily rooted in Bostonian and New England culture, none of the scenes were actually filmed in this region. This raises questions about where It Ends With Us was actually filmed. Director Justin Baldoni, who also stars as Ryle Kincaid in thecast of ItEnds With Us, made a relatively unique choice when putting together the filming locations. None of the scenes were filmed on a soundstage. Instead, he and the production team picked multiple New Jersey cities to fill in for Boston and Maine.

Jersey City And Hoboken Doubled For Boston
Rather than filming in Boston, the production for It Ends With Us took place on the New Jersey side of the New York City metropolitan area (viaPatriot Ledger). Specifically, Hoboken and Jersey City filled in for Boston. Notable locations within the bigger city that can be seen in the movie areSouth House, a Jersey City restaurant that doubles as Atlas Corrigan’s Restaurant Root, and Field Colony, an art studio that doubles as Lily Bloom’s flower shop.
Unlike Root, South House serves Southern food and is known for its role in the Jersey City nightlife. While Root is filmed at a restaurant, the production team transformed Field Colony from a shared workspace and art studio into theIt Ends With Usmain character’s flower store. According toTime Out, Tess Casey of Manhattan’s Aisling Flowers consulted on the movie, helping create the look for Lily’s flower shop. She previously consulted on The Devil Wears Prada.

The cemetery can be seen in the added scene of Lily and her mother going to see her father’s grave. Thisbook change in ItEnds With Usoffers closure to Lily, her mom, and her daughter as they end the cycle of abuse. The small-town feel of Fair Mount Cemetery perfectly fits in the fictional town of Plethora, Maine.

Plainfield is bigger than how Colleen Hoover describes Plethora in the book, but it still works perfectly.
