Summary

Bad Monkeyseason 1, episode 3, “Nobody Said He Was Alvin Einstein,” introduces Zach Braff, and he puts an interesting spin on his belovedScrubscharacter. Braff being added to theBad Monkeycastbrings the actor back into the public eye ahead of the inevitableScrubsrevivalpromised by the sitcom’s original showrunner. TheScrubsstar may not be reprising his role as Dr. John “JD” Dorian inBad Monkey, butit’s impossible not to see the dark possibilities of how JD’s life could have panned out.

Braff’s appearance inBad Monkeyis something of a miniScrubsreunion, with showrunner Bill Lawrence being at the helm for both projects. The pair collaborated onall nine seasons ofScrubsand have reunited a few times since the sitcom ended in 2010. However, their other team-ups have all been with Braff in the director’s chair while Lawrence takes on showrunning duties. So,Bad Monkeyis the first time the actor/showrunner dynamic has been restored sinceScrubs.

Bad Monkey Season 1 Episode 3 Ending Explained

Bad Monkey episode 3 has several shocking twists as Yancy meets with a suspicious doctor named O’Peele and Caitlin learns the truth about her father.

Zach Braff’s Israel O’Peele Is Like A Twisted Version Of Scrubs' JD

Braff plays disgraced doctor Israel “Izzy” O’Peele in Apple TV+‘sBad Monkey. As Braff is most known for playing JD, seeing the actor step into the role of another character in the medical field is certainly familiar territory - even if there are big differences between JD and Israel. That being said, Braff is much older than he was when he last played hisScrubscharacter, soit’s almost like seeing JD’s life afterScrubsand how badly wrong it went.

Dr. O’Peele is a pill-popping alcoholic who’s deeply embroiled in the nefarious scheme at the heart ofBad Monkey’s story.JD certainly made a few misguided decisions duringScrubs’ run, but there aren’t really any mistakes that would result in his life taking such a turn that it becomes similar to that of Braff’sBad Monkeypersona. Regardless, it’s still compelling to think about how such a development could happen.

Bad Monkeyis a live-action adaptation of a 2013 novel of the same name by Carl Hiaasen.

Although Braff was part of an ensemble cast onScrubs, he was paired with some characters more than others. One of the most frequent by far was Donald Faison’s Chris Turk. Since the show ended,Braff and Faison have remained close friendsand currently co-host aScrubsrewatch podcast namedFake Doctors, Real Friends. InBad Monkey, Vince Vaughn’sAndrew Yancy gives the Braff/Faison friendship a coy nod.

Crystal as Driggs in Bad Monkey

What Monkey Plays Driggs In Bad Monkey & Where You’ve Seen Her Before (Was She Really In POTC?)

Driggs' actor in Bad Monkey had been in the industry for a long time, making one character’s claim about the capuchin Johnny Depp’s co-star viable.

Speaking with Izzy,Yancy mentions a friend named Donald. With Braff in the scene, the namedrop from Vaughn’s character brings Faison to mind. Interestingly, Izzy is a surgeon, which separates him further from JD. However, Faison’sScrubscharacter was also a surgeon, so his name being mentioned byBad Monkey’s lead actor serves as quite a strong reference to the medical sitcom.
